Community quiet.

Maybe its all the indoctrination in school where teachers pounded obedience into the soft spot in my head, but I find it interesting that a hundred and fifty or so adults sit quietly on this train in a studyhall-like atmosphere.

People glance annoyed at people who strike up conversations as though they will get us all detention.

That is, of course, until that one person sits next to you. Then you appreciate the shared silence.

  1. It's always struck me as similar to the men's room; if you came in already having a conversation with somebody else (not cell phone, of course), it's okay to continue the conversation, but starting new ones is VERBOTEN.
